Former U.S. President Donald Trump has brokered conditional ceasefires in the Middle East, specifically in Iran, Lebanon, and Gaza. These agreements have largely halted significant military actions, but the fundamental issues fueling these conflicts remain unaddressed, leaving the region in a state of precarious peace.
Iran Ceasefire and Blockade
In Iran, Trump has employed a strategy combining threats of military intervention with negotiation efforts. Despite extending a ceasefire and maintaining a U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports, Iran has shown no public willingness to concede on its nuclear program, ballistic missiles, or support for regional proxies. Iran asserts that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until the U.S. lifts its blockade and Israel ceases attacks on Iran-backed groups. Iranian leaders reportedly believe they can withstand the blockade longer than Trump can endure rising gas prices and an unpopular war, especially with upcoming U.S. midterm elections.
Lebanon Truce and Israeli Occupation
A truce in Lebanon has largely held, though skirmishes persist along the border. Israel has indicated its intention to indefinitely occupy a portion of southern Lebanon, a demand rejected by the Iran-backed Hezbollah, which is not an official party to the truce. The U.S. and Israel have urged Lebanon’s government to disarm Hezbollah, but Beirut faces limited capacity and fears civil war if it directly confronts the militants. The ceasefire offers temporary respite, but the situation remains tense, with many in Lebanon fearing a return to Israel’s past occupation of the south.
Gaza Ceasefire and Ongoing Strikes
In Gaza, a U.S.-brokered ceasefire in October led to the release of remaining hostages held by Hamas and halted major military operations. However, Israel continues to conduct regular strikes against what it identifies as militant targets, resulting in over 790 Palestinian deaths since last year’s ceasefire, including approximately 225 children. Israel’s withdrawal from the half of Gaza it controls, the return of displaced persons, and reconstruction are all contingent on Hamas disarming, a condition the militant group has shown no sign of meeting. This leaves Gaza’s population confined to temporary shelters or ruined homes with no clear end to their suffering.
Unresolved Grievances and Papal Condemnation
Experts suggest that these ceasefires merely prevent immediate escalation rather than resolving the underlying conflicts. While visible fighting has ceased, less visible efforts continue, and ceasefires can inadvertently lock in unsustainable patterns, diminishing the urgency to address the root causes of the conflict. Concurrently, Pope Leo XIV has condemned the unjust taking of life by governments, specifically addressing the conflict in Iran. The Pope also reaffirmed the allowance for Catholic priests to bless same-sex or unmarried couples, clarifying it is not a formal liturgical blessing or an endorsement of marriage. He emphasized the dignity owed to migrants, highlighting the Vatican’s diplomatic efforts for justice.
