A recent study published in the European Journal of Epidemiology indicates a possible association between severe male infertility and an increased risk of developing non-reproductive cancers, specifically thyroid and colorectal cancers. This finding suggests that underlying genetic factors might predispose individuals to both infertility and these specific cancers.
Study Findings and Potential Causes
The research analyzed data from over 1.1 million Swedish males who had children between 1994 and 2014. A subset of 14,450 men who became fathers through intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), an assisted reproduction technique typically used for severe male infertility, were cross-referenced with the national cancer registry. The analysis revealed a significantly elevated risk of thyroid and colorectal cancer among these men.
S. Adam Ramin, MD, a urologist and urologic oncologist, clarified that the study does not imply ICSI causes infertility or cancer. Instead, it highlights that men with severe infertility, necessitating treatments like ICSI, may have a higher inherent risk for these cancers. Researchers propose that genetic mutations could impair male reproductive function while simultaneously increasing cancer susceptibility.
Lifestyle Factors and Prevention
While genetic factors are considered a primary possibility, lifestyle choices also play a crucial role in cancer risk. Factors such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, and physical inactivity are associated with both low semen quality and an increased risk of various cancers, including colorectal cancer. The study acknowledges that while it controlled for age and educational level, it did not include detailed lifestyle data.
The study authors suggest that future disease prevention initiatives should consider screening men seeking fertility treatments for potential colorectal, thyroid, and testicular cancers. Angel Elenkov, a study author and researcher at Lund University, emphasized the public health importance of this finding, especially as colon, rectal, and thyroid cancers are on the rise among younger populations. Early screening could be key to prevention.
