Overnight Russian attacks on April 25, 2026, targeted eight regions across Ukraine, resulting in several fatalities and dozens of injuries. The central Ukrainian city of Dnipro was the hardest hit, with eight people killed and 49 wounded, including two children. Other regions affected included Chernihiv, where two people died in Nizhyn; Kharkiv, where a one-year-old boy was among the wounded; and Zaporizhia, which saw one death and four injuries in a civilian minibus. Donetsk also reported casualties in Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, along with damage to homes and buildings.
Air Defenses Intercept Most Threats Amidst Civilian Infrastructure Targeting
Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russia launched 619 drones and 47 missiles. Air defense systems successfully shot down or suppressed 610 of these aerial threats. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia’s tactics continue to focus on attacking civilian infrastructure in cities using drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles. These latest attacks occurred shortly after a Russian strike on Odesa killed an elderly married couple and damaged residential buildings and a foreign ship.
Ukrainian Retaliations and EU Sanctions
In retaliation for the strikes, Ukrainian drones targeted a village in the Russian-occupied Luhansk region, resulting in three deaths. Further drone strikes were reported in Russia’s Belgorod and Kursk regions, causing one death and multiple injuries. A Ukrainian drone also reportedly hit an apartment high-rise in Yekaterinburg, deep within Russia.
The European Union recently approved a new round of sanctions against Russia, specifically targeting its energy, banking, and trade sectors. President Zelenskyy urged European leaders to expedite the implementation of these sanctions, emphasizing the critical need to counter the aggressor’s adaptations during any delays in their enforcement.
